Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a custom guitar cost?

Each T.J. Burch guitar is handcrafted using premium materials, with raw material costs starting at $750+. The building process requires a minimum of 110 hours of meticulous craftsmanship, resulting in a base price of $4,000. Each client receives a Bill of Materials, including an allowance for wood selection and custom details.

Do I have to pay the full amount upfront?

No. A deposit is required to begin the build, and any upgrades beyond the material allowance must be paid at the time of selection. The remaining balance is due upon completion and delivery of the guitar.

How long does it take to build a custom guitar?

On average, a custom guitar takes about six months from the initial consultation to final delivery. This timeline can vary depending on design complexity and material selection.

Can I choose the wood for my guitar?

Yes! Clients can select their preferred wood species for the back and sides. The top (soundboard) is typically spruce, though cedar or redwood may also be available. Additional custom options include:

  • Tuners

  • Bridge

  • Fretboard & faceplate material

  • Wood bindings & purfling

  • Custom inlays

Each selection plays a role in shaping the guitar’s tone, aesthetics, and character.

Can you build a replica of a well-known guitar model?

No. Every T.J. Burch guitar is an original design, built with its own distinct voice and personality. If you’re looking for an exact replica of a well-known model, another builder may be a better fit.

Do you artificially "age" guitars to look vintage?

No, relic-style aging is not part of my process. While aging techniques can require a specialized skill set, my focus is on crafting a responsive, finely built-instrument with an original aesthetic.

On a personal level, I believe that the natural wear and patina of a guitar should be earned over years of playing, traveling, and storytelling—not artificially manufactured. However, I do offer:

  • Torrefied tops, which mimic the tonal characteristics of aged wood.

  • Matte finish options for a more vintage-inspired look.

What body styles do you offer?

Each guitar is built using one of four classic body styles, each with a distinct tonal profile and playability:

✔️ Dreadnought – Bold projection, deep bass, and powerful resonance.

✔️ Orchestra Model (OM) – Balanced, articulate, and comfortable for all playing styles.

✔️ 000 (Triple-Ought) – A slightly smaller body, great for blues, folk, and fingerpicking.

✔️ Single 0 – The most compact model, perfect for intimate performances and vintage appeal.

What makes a T.J. Burch guitar different?

Each guitar is 100% handcrafted—no mass production, no shortcuts. Every instrument is designed for optimal sound, durability, and comfort, using traditional luthier techniques and premium materials. Unlike factory-made guitars, a T.J. Burch guitar is built to be one-of-a-kind, customized to your playing style and preferences.

Do you build electric guitars?

No, T.J. Burch specializes in acoustic guitars. The focus is on crafting instruments where the wood itself creates and shapes the sound rather than relying on electronics. However, certain customizations—such as pickup installations for amplification—are available.

Can I request a custom nut width or neck profile?

Yes! Every guitar is built to fit the player, so neck shape, string spacing and nut width can all be customized based on your comfort and playing style.

Can I visit the shop during the build process?

Yes! If you're local (or willing to travel), clients are welcome to schedule a visit to see their guitar come to life. In fact, it is preferred for clients to come to the shop while T.J. shapes the neck to ensure the contour, size and shape of the neck matches the clients’ desire. Regular progress updates and photos are also provided for long-distance clients.

What finish options do you offer?

Guitars can be finished in a glossy or matte finish, depending on your aesthetic and tonal preference. Some players prefer a matte or satin finish for a more vintage look and a slightly warmer tone.

Do you offer repairs or setup services?

While the main focus is on building custom guitars, setup services and minor repairs may be available for past clients. If you own a T.J. Burch guitar and need adjustments, reach out to discuss options.

Do you ship guitars outside the U.S.?

If at all possible, hand-delivery is preferred. Shipping guitars brings in a whole host of environmental effects that are not conducive to the health of a highly responsive guitar. If not possible, shipping is available within the United States. If you are outside the U.S. and interested in a build, reach out to discuss possible arrangements.
